Description:

This course is a critical inquiry to understand and innovate within a variety of materials' lifecycles in design. Students will be introduced to a series of scenarios to investigate how materials interact with design processes, users, and the environment. This ranges from extraction, production, and use to disposal or reuse. The course emphasizes identifying sustainable material choices, understanding the environmental impact, the power structures on how materials are globally distributed, and contributing to a discourse of contemporary design processes. Through research projects and experimental design methods, students will explore emerging material as it pertains to personal and collective practice. Prerequisites: 'C-' or better in (ARCH 2630 AND CMP 2010 AND DES2615 AND DES 2630 AND Full Major status in Design) OR Department Consent
